Dev Diwali, celebrated on Kartik Purnima, signifies the culmination of the Kartik month in the lunar calendar. In the year 2023, Dev Diwali will be commemorated on November 26th, while the observance of Kartik Purnima, including fasting and ceremonial bathing, will take place on November 27th due to variations in the lunar calendar.
Widely recognized as the ‘Diwali of the gods,’ Dev Diwali involves ritualistic morning ablutions in the Ganges and an evening ceremony of illuminating lamps on the ghats. This significant festivity holds a profound association with Lord Shiva.

The Mythical Tale of Dev Diwali (Dev Diwali Katha):
Ancient myths narrate the tale of Lord Shiva’s son, Kartikeya, who conquered the demon Tarakasura. Seeking retribution for their father’s demise, Tarakasura’s three sons—Tarakaaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali, collectively known as Tripurasura—embarked on intense penance. Their austere penitence eventually pleased Lord Brahma, who granted them a boon, stipulating their invincibility only when the three cities they constructed aligned in a row during the Abhijit Nakshatra, and an impossible chariot armed with an impossible arrow attacked them. Empowered by this boon, the tyranny of Tripurasura escalated, leading to significant events.
