The Chhattisgarh Assembly elections witnessed a significant turn as 9 ministers from Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s government faced defeat. Among these, Deputy CM TS Singh Deo and Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu were part of the unexpected outcomes.
Reflecting back on the 2018 period when Congress claimed victory in the state, these two leaders were also in the limelight for the Chief Ministerial position.
TS Singh Deo, contesting from the Ambikapur seat, faced a narrow loss to BJP candidate Rajesh Agrawal by a margin of merely 94 votes. Singh Deo secured 90,686 votes while Agrawal obtained 90,780 votes.
Meanwhile, in the Durg Rural seat, BJP candidate Lalit Chandrakar emerged victorious over Tamradhwaj Sahu by a margin exceeding 16,000 votes.
Within Bhupesh Baghel’s government, ministers Ravindra Choubey, Mohammad Akbar, Shivkumar Dahariya, Guru Rudra Kumar, Amarjeet Bhagat, Mohan Markam, and Jay Singh Agrawal also found themselves among those who lost in the Assembly elections.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel secured victory in his Patan seat. However, Congress’ State President Deepak Baij faced defeat with a margin of 8,370 votes.
In the 90-seat Assembly, BJP claimed victory on 54 seats while Congress managed to secure 35. Additionally, the Gondwana Gantantra Party of Chhattisgarh secured victory on one seat.
This electoral landscape emphasizes BJP’s dominance in crucial constituencies, highlighting the shifts in power dynamics within Chhattisgarh’s political arena.
