The ongoing uproar in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha continues to revolve around lapses in parliamentary security. Opposition members persistently demand statements and discussions from Home Minister Amit Shah. This disruption has halted significant legislative proceedings in both houses, causing a suspension of activities for the day.
Congress’ Concerns: Mallikarjun Kharge’s Perspective
Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President, emphasized that raising voices on matters of national security is a parliamentary duty. However, the government insists that orders for an investigation have been issued, emphasizing the avoidance of politicizing the issue.
Mallikarjun Kharge’s Response
Kharge stated, “Suspending opposition members unlawfully over the grave oversight in parliamentary and MPs’ security is unjust. How is it fair to allow the Home Minister to speak on television but restrict statements within the parliament? There’s a demand for Amit Shah to address the Parliament, followed by discussions in both houses.”
Opposition’s Specific Concerns
Some opposition members are calling for action against BJP MP Pratap Simha for inciting disturbances within the parliament premises with two individuals entering the premises wielding weapons.
Government’s Stance: Anurag Thakur’s Remarks
Central Minister Anurag Thakur remarked, “The opposition seeks excuses to halt proceedings after losing elections in states. They are creating hurdles, despite discussions held with opposition representatives and assurances given regarding security improvements.”
Thakur continued during an interview with PTI, “It’s evident they are attempting to play politics.”
Previous Disruptions and Actions Taken
Similar disruptions occurred previously, resulting in the suspension of 13 Lok Sabha and one Rajya Sabha member during the Winter Session. Opposition parties continue their protest against this action within the parliamentary premises, with key figures like Sonia Gandhi from Congress and TMC’s suspended Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien participating. Derek chose a ‘silent protest’ with a message on his T-shirt.
Suspended Members Across Parties
Among those suspended in Lok Sabha are Congress’s V. K. Sreekandan, Benny Behanan, Mohammad Javed, Manickam Tagore, T. N. Prathapan, Hibi Eden, Jothimani, Ramya Haridas, and Dean Kuriakose, along with CPI(M)’s KN Balagopal, S. Venkatesan from CPI(M), and P. R. Natarajan from CPI.
