Congress President Sonia Gandhi: During the winter session of Parliament, Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) President Sonia Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the suspension of 141 opposition MPs. Addressing the CPP meeting, Sonia Gandhi expressed concerns over the choking of democracy, terming it an unprecedented event in the history of the country.
Undermining Democracy: Sonia Gandhi’s Critique
In her address at the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting, Sonia Gandhi voiced, “This government has throttled democracy. Never before have so many opposition MPs been suspended from the House, that too for rightful and legitimate demands. The incident that occurred on December 13th, where opposition members sought a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha, was extraordinary. The arrogance displayed in responding to this request leaves me speechless.”
Sonia Gandhi’s Remarks on PM Modi
Continuing her critique, she added, “What transpired on December 13th is unforgivable and cannot be justified. The Prime Minister took four days to address the nation and express his thoughts on the incident, and even then, it was a response made outside the Parliament. This act blatantly displays a disregard for the sanctity of the House and the people of our nation. I leave it to your imagination what the BJP would have done if they were in the opposition today.”
Attempt to Tarnish Jawaharlal Nehru’s Legacy
Referring to Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement regarding Jammu and Kashmir-related bills and former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Congress President remarked, “This session witnessed the passage of some crucial bills related to Jammu and Kashmir. There have been attempts to malign the reputation of great patriots like Jawaharlal Nehru. There’s an ongoing campaign to distort historical facts and truths. While the Prime Minister and Home Minister spearhead these efforts, we refuse to be intimidated or bow down. We will continue to stand firm in speaking the truth.”
