In a move that underscores the intricate ties between religion, culture, and politics in India, the Congress party recently announced its decision to boycott the grand inauguration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, slated for January 22nd. This decision, however, has sparked diverse reactions within various factions of the party across the country.
Divergent Views Within the Party
In a significant departure from the party line, Vikramaditya Singh, a minister in the Himachal Pradesh government and the son of the state’s former Chief Minister Veerbhadra Singh, has declared his intention to attend the ceremony. This decision by Vikramaditya Singh not only demonstrates the complex dynamics within the Congress party but also highlights the broader political and cultural significance of the Ram Temple.
Vikramaditya’s mother, Pratibha Singh, who is the current President of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee and a member of Parliament, has also expressed her reverence for the late Veerbhadra Singh’s devotion to Lord Ram and his contributions to the restoration of temples.
Pratibha Singh’s Acknowledgment of PM Modi’s Initiative
Adding another layer to the narrative, Pratibha Singh publicly appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative in the construction of the Ram Temple. In a video surfaced on a social media platform ‘X’, she was heard saying, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative in the construction of the Ram Temple is truly commendable.” She also reminisced about her late husband’s deep faith in God and his role in the restoration of various temples in the state.
The Invitation and its Significance
On January 12th, during a conversation with PTI, Pratibha Singh revealed that she and her son Vikramaditya Singh had received a joint invitation to attend the inauguration. ABP News sources confirmed Vikramaditya Singh’s participation in the January 22nd Pran Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony in Ayodhya.
Gratitude and Non-Political Stance
Expressing gratitude for the invitation, Vikramaditya Singh emphasized that his attendance was not a political statement. He said, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of this historic day. As a Hindu who believes in the ‘Dev Samaj’, it’s my duty to be present and witness the consecration of Lord Ram. I come from a devout Hindu family, and my visit to the temple is not politically motivated.”
The Legacy of Veerbhadra Singh
Veerbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, left an indelible mark on the state’s politics and culture. Under Pratibha Singh’s leadership, the Congress fought the 2022 legislative assembly elections, resulting in a victory that saw Vikramaditya Singh being appointed as the Minister of Public Works.
