Early Life and Education
Pema Khandu, the incumbent Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, was born on August 21, 1979, in Gyangkhar village, Lemberdung. He hails from the Monpa tribe. His father, Late Dorjee Khandu, also served as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, shaping Pema’s early exposure to politics and public service.
Khandu received his schooling at Government Secondary School in Bomba, Tawang, graduating in 1995. He then pursued further education at Donyi-Polo Vidya Bhawan in Itanagar, completing his schooling in 1997. His quest for knowledge led him to Hindu College, Delhi University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree in History in the year 2000.
Political Journey and Social Engagements
Pema Khandu’s political journey began under the guidance of his father, actively assisting him since 1998. His commitment to public service became evident when he was sworn in as a cabinet minister for Water Resources Development (WRD) and Tourism on May 20, 2011, in the government led by Jarbom Gamlin.
Continuing his ascent, Khandu assumed the role of Cabinet Minister for Rural Work and Tourism on November 21, 2011, in the Nabam Tuki government. His portfolio expanded to include Tourism, Civil Aviation, Art, and Culture. In recognition of his capabilities, he was inducted as a cabinet minister once again on June 1, 2014, following the general elections.
His crowning achievement came on July 17, 2016, when he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, a position he holds with distinction to this day.

Beyond his political endeavors, Pema Khandu is deeply engaged in social and cultural activities. He champions the promotion of Bodhi language and literature, emphasizing the preservation of indigenous languages and cultural heritage.
His commitment to environmental conservation is evident through initiatives like conducting plantation drives and organizing periodic medical camps and educational programs, particularly in Tawang district.
Recognizing the importance of sports and recreation, Khandu actively promotes games and sports at the village, block, and district levels, fostering community engagement and healthy living.

Pema Khandu is a family man, with a wife and four children. His personal interests include music and social service, reflecting his dedication to both leisure and community welfare.
He resides in Itanagar, where he continues to pursue his vision of a peaceful and socio-economically vibrant Arunachal Pradesh. Khandu’s leadership is characterized by a focus on governance-related systemic reforms, aimed at building a robust administrative framework to propel the state into a new era of prosperity and development.
