Why is Hanuman Jayanti Celebrated?
Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman, the devoted follower of Lord Rama. It is observed twice a year, with the first celebration marking Hanuman’s birth and the second one commemorating his victory.
According to the epic Ramayana, Hanuman was born on the Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik on a Tuesday under the Aries ascendant. Hence, Tuesdays are dedicated to Hanuman worship. This is why Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on this day every year.
The second Hanuman Jayanti, celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Chaitra, has an interesting mythological story associated with it. It is believed that Hanuman was born with extraordinary powers.
Once, during his childhood, Hanuman mistook the sun for a fruit and flew towards it to eat it. As he approached the sun, the entire universe plunged into darkness. Hearing the chaos, Lord Indra struck Hanuman with his thunderbolt, causing him to fall to the earth.
Upon learning about this incident, Hanuman’s father, Lord Pavan (the god of wind), became furious and withdrew all the air from the universe, resulting in a state of chaos. To calm him down, Lord Brahma granted Hanuman the boon of immortality, and thus, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of the Chaitra month every year.
