Amethi and Raebareli: Political Strongholds
Amethi and Raebareli have been considered the strongholds of the Gandhi family in Indian politics. However, this time around, according to sources, none of the members of the Gandhi family will contest elections from Amethi and Raebareli.
The Hanuman Temple of Amethi
Amethi is not only known for its politics but also for the famous Hanuman Temple in Gauriganj. The history of this temple dates back 200 years. The 56-foot tall statue of Lord Hanuman here attracts people from all over. About 200 years ago, this area belonged to King Raktambar Singh, who was considered a descendant of Lord Rama. Due to an earthquake, his fort was turned upside down, giving the area its name “Ullat Ganj” or inverted fort.
Raebareli Constituency
It’s worth noting that Sonia Gandhi has been contesting elections from Raebareli since 2004, and she has won every time. However, after her election to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, this seat has been vacant. Sonia Gandhi has won elections here in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019. Nevertheless, according to sources, no member of the Gandhi family will contest from here this time.
The Dalmau of Raebareli
Raebareli is known not only for the Gandhi family but also for its Dalmau region. Even today, in some villages of Raebareli’s Dalmau area, Holi is celebrated as a day of mourning. The reason for this dates back 700 years. According to information, once the king of Dalmau, Dal Dev, was boating in the Ganga River. At the same time, the daughter of the Mughal ruler of Jaunpur, Salma, was also boating. During this time, King Dal Dev fell in love with Salma. Afterward, he brought Salma to his palace as his wife.
However, the Mughal ruler didn’t like this. To take revenge, he attacked Dalmau several times, but all attempts were unsuccessful. After that, he took the help of Raja Manik Chand of Manikpur to defeat King Dal Dev under a policy of deceit.
He informed that on the day of Holi, King Dal Dev celebrates with his subjects and army. On Holi day, the Mughal ruler attacked Dalmau. King Dal Dev jumped into battle with his 200 soldiers. During this time, he faced the 2000 soldiers of the Mughal ruler and sacrificed his life to protect his subjects.
By focusing on these aspects, Amethi and Raebareli are renowned for their historical, cultural, and political significance, making them stand out in the Indian landscape.
