Depression is currently one of the most significant challenges in mental health. Due to a lack of awareness, many individuals unknowingly neglect it, leading to prolonged suffering and the escalation of depression. While depression is considered a fairly normal mental issue, if left untreated, it can become life-threatening.
Recognizing the Last Stage of Depression
According to Senior Psychiatrist Dr. Satyakant Trivedi, when serotonin levels in the brain are low, depression becomes a problem. As an individual falls into the grip of depression, their behavior starts to change. Persistent sadness for 14 days, recurring negative thoughts, inability to perform tasks correctly, and a preference for isolation are signs that mark the last stage of depression, which is extremely perilous.
How Dangerous is the Last Stage of Depression?
Dr. Satyakant Trivedi states that excessive stress from work, a distressing event, or a traumatic experience can lead a person into the grip of depression. Initially, their behavior changes, they don’t perform tasks as they used to, and their self-esteem decreases. If attention is not paid to their condition at this stage, their mental health deteriorates, and they can reach the final stage. In the last stage of depression, the ability to think clearly diminishes, and they lose control over themselves. In such a state, a person can harm themselves, and in extreme cases, they may resort to suicide.
Depression as a Major Cause of Suicide
Health experts assert that depression is the leading cause of suicide worldwide. In this condition, individuals perceive themselves as worthless. After struggling with mental illness for many years, they lose hope, fail to find meaning in life, and resort to suicide.
Treatment for Depression
Dr. Trivedi emphasizes that treating depression is quite straightforward. However, it should be recognized as an illness, and one should seek proper advice from a doctor. Upon noticing symptoms of depression, individuals should talk to their family or friends, share their mental distress, and seek counseling and medication from a doctor. Proper treatment can eliminate depression.
