5-Door Mini Cooper In India: Mini has shared details about the new 5-door Cooper for the first time. This new hatchback will come to India sometime later. Mini India has recently started taking bookings for the Countryman EV SUV and the Cooper S 3-door hatchback, and now there is not much time left for the 5-door to come to the market.
What’s new in the Mini Cooper 5-door?
The new 5-door Mini is an extended version of its previous model 3-door Cooper and has replaced that car’s four-seat interior for a more conventional 5-seat set-up with a rear bench. At 4,036 mm, this model is 160 mm longer than the 3-door and 31 mm longer than the old 5-door model. It comes with 38 mm extra rear leg room and 65 liters more boot space than the 3-door, 275 liters of seating space.
With the 3-door Cooper, two petrol powertrain options will be available. The entry-level Cooper C gets a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-pot that produces 154hp and 230Nm with FWD and does the 0-100kph sprint in 8.0 seconds. The Cooper S gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with outputs boosted to 204hp and 300Nm. It does the 0-100kph sprint in 6.8 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds less than the 3-door Cooper S.
The new Cooper is only available with an automatic gearbox, as Mini removed the manual version from the line-up last year. Unlike the 3-door, the larger Cooper will not be offered with a battery-electric powertrain. In some markets, the role of the 5-door electric car has effectively been taken over by the Chinese-made Aceman EV, which is based on the same platform as the electric 3-door Cooper.
The 5-door model will be built alongside the petrol-powered 5-door at Mini’s Oxford plant, which is being revamped to begin production of the electric Cooper and Aceman in 2026. The upcoming Mini Convertible, the last model to arrive amid a revamp of the brand’s line-up, will also be built at Oxford. The 5-door is the last car to be revealed by Mini CEO Stephanie Wurst, as she is being replaced by BMW’s corporate strategy boss Stefan Reichmann. While the exact timeline is still unknown, Mini India is likely to bring the new 5-door Cooper to the country. Its third generation was previously available for sale in the country, but was discontinued long ago.
