Lok Sabha Secretariat told the reason for not administering the oath
A Supreme Court decision has come in the way of Afzal Ansari’s oath, which was given by the court on his own petition. Lok Sabha Secretariat has given the reason for not administering the oath to Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari. Lok Sabha Secretariat passed an order, according to which, ‘In reference to the appeal of Afzal Ansari, the Supreme Court passed an order on 14 December 2023, suspending the order of conviction given to the applicant Afzal Ansari in Trial 980/2012 by the Ghazipur Special Court, then in the same order he was also barred from participating in the proceedings of the House. In such a situation, the oath taking ceremony of the elected members held in the House today is also a part of the proceedings of the Lok Sabha, so Afzal Ansari is not being sworn in it.
What did the Supreme Court say in its decision?
In fact, Afzal Ansari, who won the election from Ghazipur on a BSP ticket last time, was sentenced to four years in a case under the Gangster Act and lost his Lok Sabha membership. After this, he went to the High Court, but when he did not get relief from there, he went to the Supreme Court. Afzal Ansari got his membership back from the Supreme Court, but the court imposed some restrictions. The Supreme Court stayed the sentence given to Afzal Ansari on 14 December last year, but this matter is pending in the High Court. The Supreme Court said in its decision that until the decision on his appeal is not taken by the Allahabad High Court, he will not be able to participate in the proceedings of the Parliament. Along with this, he will not be able to vote on any issue in the House.
