Wayanad Landslides Updates: A lot of devastation has been caused due to the landslide in Wayanad, Kerala in the early hours of Tuesday (July 30). So far 151 people have died. Information about many people missing is coming to the fore. Relief and rescue work is going on and trapped people are being evacuated. Health Minister Veena George is going to reach Wayanad in a few moments. Apart from him, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose are also reaching Wayanad. Both of them will take information about the rescue operation going on after the Wayanad landslide.
The death toll in the Wayanad landslide has risen to 151. Indian Army personnel have started a rescue operation in Choorlamala. Four army teams are engaged in rescue operations here. NDRF teams are also working to rescue people.
The Meteorological Department has said that there is going to be heavy rain with strong winds in the next three hours. The department has issued a red alert for heavy rain in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts of Kerala. Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts are also going to receive heavy rain in the next three hours.
According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), members of Fire and Rescue, Civil Defense, NDRF and local emergency response teams are involved in rescue operations. About 200 Indian Army personnel from DSC Centre Kannur and 122 TA Battalion from Kozhikode are also present at the spot.
Two helicopters of the Indian Air Force, one MI-17 and one ALH are also engaged in rescue operations. On the second day of the rescue operation, soldiers of the 122 Infantry Battalion of the Territorial Army are moving from their shelters to help people in the landslide affected areas in Meppadi and Wayanad.
In view of the disaster and continuous rain, all schools and colleges will remain closed on Wednesday (31 July). Holiday has also been declared in 11 districts of Kerala – Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta.
More than 120 people injured in the Wayanad landslide are undergoing treatment in different hospitals in Wayanad. According to local officials, most of the victims of the landslide worked in tea gardens and lived in small houses on the roadside or in the gardens.
NDRF commander Akhilesh Kumar said, “We rescued injured victims from Mundakkai village yesterday. We fear that the victims may be trapped in collapsed buildings. Till 10 pm last night, we rescued 70 people, after which we had to stop due to bad weather and rain.”
Akhilesh said, “Many teams are carrying out rescue operations, so we cannot give the exact number of deaths. We only know about the bodies recovered by our team. People have been given shelter in a resort and a mosque on the other side of the river. It is still raining, so there is a possibility of another landslide.”
The Army deployed for rescue operations in Wayanad district has managed to rescue about 1000 people with the help of a temporary bridge after permanent infrastructure was washed away due to heavy rains and landslides.
