Who was Meena Kumari?
Born on 1 August 1933 in Dadar, Mumbai, Mehjabeen was named Meena Kumari after entering the film industry. Her fathers were Ali Bux and Iqbal Begum and her father wanted a son, so he was disappointed with Meena Kumari. Meena Kumari was the second daughter of her parents.
Meena Kumari’s childhood was spent without her father’s love and as soon as she grew up, she was offered a film seeing her beauty in which she had a small role and got 25 rupees for it. That film was ‘Leatherface’ which was released in 1939. Meena Kumari’s father could not send her to school, so she started working from childhood and later made it her full-time profession.

When Meena Kumari started earning a little, she took private tuition at home and studied on her own. Meena did her first film at the age of 4. At the age of 16, her first film ‘Bachchon Ka Khel’ was released (1946) after which her film career as a lead actress began. Meena Kumari did about 90 films in her 33-year film career and most of her roles were serious, so she was also called the Tragedy Queen.
Meena Kumari’s painful end
Filmmaker Kamal Amrohi did many films with Meena Kumari and during that time they fell in love. Both wanted to get married but Kamal was already married. However, they got married secretly.
According to media reports, some time ago, Kamal’s son from his first wife, Tajdar Amrohi, gave an interview. In it, he revealed that at the time of marriage, conditions were put in front of Meena Kumari, which included conditions like returning home before 6 pm, not wearing revealing clothes, not going out with any co-star and not signing another new film.
Meena Kumari did the Nikah but was completely trapped and she was subjected to a lot of atrocities due to which she started drowning in the intoxication of alcohol. Later she started living separately without getting a divorce but in the last days her liver got damaged and after being in coma for two days, she died on 28 March 1972.
