Wayanad Landslides News: The landslide in Wayanad district of Kerala has caused massive destruction. Relief and rescue work is going on and people are being pulled out from under the debris. Some people have been lucky that they have been pulled out alive by the rescue personnel, while some have not been so lucky. Saturday (August 3) is the fourth day of the rescue operation in Wayanad. In Churmala of Wayanad, from NDRF to Army personnel are engaged in the work of saving people.
The rescue team is searching for people alive with the help of advanced technical equipment and search dogs. During this, a large number of bodies are also being recovered. This has been the most terrible disaster in Kerala in the last few years. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said in a Facebook post that the radar has noticed some movements under the debris, which are evidence of people being alive. So far 334 people have died in the Wayanad landslide. The bodies of 210 people have been recovered, while 187 people have been discharged from the hospital after treatment. However, about 300 people are still missing after the landslide. It is hoped that these people are still alive.
Rescue operation took place in Wayanad on Saturday. Lieutenant Colonel Vikas Rana said, “Today also our plan is the same as yesterday. We have divided different zones and the team has left for there. Search dogs and scientists have also gone with the teams. Local people are also helping us in the rescue operation.” On the fourth day of the landslide, a family of four was rescued from a house near Padavetti Kunnu, giving a ray of hope to hundreds of rescue workers looking for survivors. About 40 rescue teams, along with dogs, are conducting search operations in six areas of the landslide affected areas. Forest officials rescued four children and their parents of a tribal community during the rescue operation. The team led by Kalpetta Range Forest Officer K Hasheesh went deep inside the forest to rescue the family. An official said that we got signals on the radar that someone was breathing. Then we went and rescued them. IMD has also released the weather update of Wayanad for Saturday. The department has said that Wayanad will remain cloudy and there will be intermittent rain. Heavy rains had also caused hindrances in the rescue operation. However, the rescue operation has been intensified after the rain stopped.
Many countries, including the US, China, Germany and the Netherlands, on Friday condoled the loss of life and property in the Wayanad landslide. Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain have also expressed solidarity with India on the Kerala incident. On behalf of the US, the State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs posted a solidarity message.
US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden expressed condolences, praising the bravery of the rescue workers. The White House said, “We are heartbroken with the families who have lost their loved ones and we express our condolences to the people of India during this difficult time.” The central government has issued a draft notification to declare 56,800 sq km of Western Ghats including 13 villages of Wayanad in Kerala as Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA). This notification has been issued a day after more than 300 people lost their lives due to landslide in Wayanad. 2,597 people from 707 families are living in 17 relief camps in Meppadi. About 10,000 people have taken shelter in a total of 91 camps across the district. At present, more emphasis is being given on rescuing people. The search operation has gained momentum after the completion of the construction of 190 feet long ‘Bailey Bridge’ by the Army.
