8th Generation BMW 5 Series: BMW introduced the eighth-generation 5 Series range in May 2023. Now, more than a year later, the company has officially announced the launch of this version of the popular sedan in India on July 24. Set to come in long wheelbase (LWB) form, the new 5 Series will compete directly with its rival, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (available as LWB in India).
Design and Interior
With the launch of this model in India, it will be the second market after China where the 5 Series will come in LWB form. Earlier, the EV derivative of the new 5 Series, called the i5, was launched in India in April 2024. Exterior highlights of the 2024 BMW 5 Series include the signature kidney grille design, new headlamps with twin C-shaped LED DRLs, chunky front bumper with silver inserts, new alloy wheels, illuminated grille, new wraparound two-piece LED taillights and a ‘5’ badge on the C-pillar. Inside the new generation 5 Series, you will get a 14.9-inch freestanding touchscreen system, a 12.3-inch fully digital driver console, reclining rear seats, four-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof and a foldable 31.1-inch display for second-row passengers.
Powertrain
The upcoming 5 Series is expected to get 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engine options, which will be paired with a mild-hybrid system. An 8-speed automatic transmission will be available across the range.
Who will compete with?
Upon launch, it will compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which is available in three variants; Expression, Exclusive and the new AMG Line. The first two variants are available with petrol and diesel engines, while the last variant is available only with a diesel engine. Their ex-showroom price is between Rs 63.6 lakh and Rs 80.9 lakh. The Expression and Exclusive variants of the E-Class are available with a 2.0-litre petrol (E200) or diesel (E220d) engine. The petrol engine produces 197PS of power and 320Nm of torque, while the diesel engine produces 194PS of power and 400Nm of torque. The AMG Line variant is available with a 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder diesel engine that produces 286PS of power and 600Nm of torque. All three engines are equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
