In the wake of escalating cases of the COVID-19 JN.1 sub-variant in Karnataka, the state government has swiftly transitioned into alert mode. The dedicated sub-committee for coronavirus in Karnataka issued preventive directives on Tuesday, December 27, emphasizing the importance of adhering to COVID-19 protocols. These measures include mandatory mask-wearing in public places, maintaining social distancing, and a seven-day isolation period for those infected.
Targeted Vaccination Drive for Vulnerable Groups
The government’s sub-committee advised elderly individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions to receive precautionary vaccination as a protective measure. To support this initiative, Karnataka has decided to procure 30,000 doses of the Corbevax vaccine from the central government. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that there would be no restrictions on New Year celebrations, but guidelines pertaining to the same will be announced.
Mandatory Mask Advisory
Health Minister Gundu Rao emphasized the importance of wearing masks, especially for people over 60 and those battling existing health issues. He also advised that children exhibiting symptoms like cold and fever should not attend school and be monitored at home. Additionally, the minister mentioned that testing for children may be necessary if required.
Guidelines for COVID-19 Patient Leave
Highlighting the protocols for COVID-19 infected individuals, the Health Minister stressed that hospitalization might not be necessary for everyone. Those in home isolation, including employees in government and private sectors, should be granted a mandatory week-long casual leave. For those requiring hospitalization, special leave provisions will be made. Guidelines regarding these measures will be released soon.
Current Scenario in Karnataka
As of now, Karnataka has reported 34 cases of the JN.1 variant, including three fatalities. Across India, there have been 69 cases of this variant, with Karnataka accounting for a significant portion. Despite these numbers, the Health Minister assures the public that there is no cause for panic.
