Parliament Session 2024: After no consensus was reached on the Lok Sabha Speaker, politics has heated up on this. The central government held the opposition responsible for this, while the opposition has slammed the central government on this matter. For the Speaker election, the NDA has fielded Om Birla, while the opposition has fielded Congress MP K. Suresh. Voting will be held at 11 am today for this. Meanwhile, the opposition has suffered a major setback, as till now 7 MPs have not taken oath and they will not be able to vote in the Speaker election.
On the second day of the Parliament session, many stalwarts including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav took oath, but 5 opposition and 2 independent MPs could not take oath. These include Shatrughan Sinha, Nurul Islam and Deepak Adhikari of TMC. Apart from this, Shashi Tharoor of Congress and Afzal Ansari of SP could not take oath. Along with this, two independent MPs Amrit Pal Singh and Engineer Rasheed also did not take oath, because both are in jail.
Will not be able to vote in Speaker election without oath
According to the rule, the 7 MPs who have not yet taken oath as MPs will not be able to vote in the Speaker election today (26 June). It is being told that when the proceedings of the Lok Sabha start on Wednesday, the names of those newly elected MPs will be called first, who have not yet taken oath of Parliament membership. However, if they are not sworn in before the Speaker election to be held at 11 o’clock, then they will not be able to vote. This can be a big blow to the opposition, because out of these 7 MPs, 5 MPs are included in the opposition alliance India Block.
Competition between Om Birla and K Suresh for Speaker
There was no consensus between the government and the opposition parties regarding the selection of the Lok Sabha Speaker. The ruling NDA alliance has again nominated the current Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla as its candidate. At the same time, the opposition parties have nominated Congress MP K. Suresh as their candidate for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. The proposal for the post of Speaker of both the leaders has been filed.
Voting for the post of Speaker in the Lok Sabha will be held today (26 June) at 11 am. However, if we talk about the strength in the House, Om Birla is considered to be sure to win the election easily as the NDA alliance candidate. At present, the BJP-led NDA alliance has a total of 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha and all the MPs have taken oath. On the other hand, the India Alliance has a total of 235 MPs, out of which 5 MPs have not taken oath yet.
