In the wake of violence in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, the administration has swiftly taken action against the perpetrators. As part of this, the administration has sent a notice of recovery of more than INR 2.44 crores to the mastermind behind the Haldwani violence, Abdul Malik. Abdul Malik has been given until February 15th to deposit the amount. Prior to this, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had announced the establishment of a police station on the land freed from encroachment in the Banbhoolpura area.
Situation Calming Down in Banbhoolpura
Officials have indicated that the curfew is limited only to Banbhoolpura and the situation in the area is gradually returning to normalcy. Additional contingents of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, while 120 weapon licenses have been revoked in the region. During his address at the Women’s Power Festival in Haridwar, the Chief Minister stated that following the removal of encroachments from a garden in Banbhoolpura, several acres of land have been reclaimed. Dhami remarked, “I announce today from the sacred banks of Mother Ganga that a police station will be established at that location.”
Assault on Team Sent to Remove Encroachment
On February 8th, during the demolition of illegal madrasas and prayer sites in “Malik’s Garden” in Banbhoolpura, miscreants launched an attack on the administrative team. Stone-pelting and arson occurred, resulting in the burning of the Banbhoolpura police station. In response, the police also resorted to the use of force, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to more than 100 people, including policemen.
Government’s Firm Stand Against Misdeeds
The Chief Minister reiterated that such actions would not be tolerated at any cost in Uttarakhand. Efforts are underway to apprehend those involved in orchestrating this conspiracy. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated, “The law is doing its job. Those behind this conspiracy will be brought to justice soon.”
Abdul Malik Issued a Notice of INR 2.44 Crores
The Haldwani Municipal Corporation has issued a notice of recovery of INR 2.44 crores against Malik for allegedly causing damage to government properties. The notice issued by the Municipal Commissioner states that during the attack on the administrative team tasked with demolishing two illegal buildings constructed in “Malik’s Garden,” Malik’s supporters caused damage to municipal properties.
The notice also mentions the primary investigation conducted on the day of the incident on February 8th, where Malik’s name appeared. The initial assessment of the damages allegedly caused by Malik amounts to INR 2.44 crores, and he has been instructed to deposit this amount with the Municipal Corporation, Haldwani, by February 15th.
Abdul Malik had constructed the illegal madrasa and prayer site
Abdul Malik was allegedly responsible for the construction of illegal madrasas and prayer sites, the demolition of which sparked violence. Senior Superintendent of Police Prahlad Meena of Nainital revealed that additional contingents of central paramilitary forces have been deployed in Banbhoolpura. Previously, there were approximately 1000 soldiers stationed in the area. He stated that essential supplies are being provided in Banbhoolpura, and additional facilities will soon be made available to the people.
The police in Haldwani have arrested 30 individuals so far in connection with inciting violence on February 8th in the Banbhoolpura area. Meanwhile, the Nainital administration has revoked 120 weapon licenses in Banbhoolpura. District Magistrate Vandana Singh of Nainital stated that it was found through records that there were 120 weapon licenses in Banbhoolpura, all of which have been revoked. She stated that every effort is being made to ensure peace in Haldwani.
The District Magistrate said that the situation is normal in all areas of Haldwani, including Banbhoolpura, and is under control. She said, “Essential services such as buses, railways, etc., for normal public life have resumed in Haldwani. Schools have reopened, markets have reopened. The curfew is only limited to Banbhoolpura.”
