In the annals of history, the inception of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Library dates back to the year 1921, initially known as the ‘U.P. Legislative Council Library’. Its primary objective was to cater to the intellectual needs of the members of the then Legislative Council. Additionally, the library extended its services to the high-ranking officials of the administration, facilitating their access to knowledge resources.

Renaming and Expansion

By the year 1937, with the bifurcation of the Legislative Assembly, the library underwent a nomenclatural change to ‘Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly Library’. Notably, it was during the tenure of Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, the inaugural President of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, that a significant declaration was made. On April 25, 1950, he proclaimed the library to serve both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council, thereby renaming it as the ‘Legislative Assembly Library’.

Evolution and Milestones

Under the astute guidance of Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, the library expanded its horizons, evolving into what it is known as today – the ‘Legislative Library’. The multifaceted development of its collection, particularly post-independence, witnessed an accumulation of books covering an array of subjects, meticulously curated to serve the scholarly pursuits of its patrons.

Platinum Jubilee Celebration

Marking 75 years of successful operation, the year 1996 commemorated the ‘Platinum Jubilee’ of the library, symbolizing a journey rich with contributions to the intellectual landscape of Uttar Pradesh.

Through the sands of time, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Library stands as a testament to the enduring pursuit of knowledge and its indispensable role in shaping the legislative ethos of the state.
