Even after the results of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the rhetoric about EVMs has not ended. Even now many leaders raise questions about EVMs. In fact, the Election Commission has received applications from 8 candidates of the Lok Sabha elections for verification of the burnt memory of EVM and VVPAT. Today we will tell you what is burnt memory and how important it is for EVMs.
Burnt Memory
Let us tell you that burnt memory keeps the data of EVM safe. According to the official report, the EVM control unit can store the result in its memory for more than 10 years. According to the information, India’s EVM is considered much safer than the voting machines of other countries. The biggest reason for this is the presence of burnt memory in it. Burnt memory means to permanently lock the memory after the programming phase is completed. So that no tampering can be done in it.
According to the report of the Election Commission, the program (software) used in EVMs is burned in a one-time programmable/masked chip (hardware). After this happens, that program cannot be read. Apart from this, the program cannot be changed and rewritten. In this way, there is no possibility of reprogramming the EVM in any special way. Due to which the possibility of tampering with the EVM is eliminated. This is the reason why the EVMs present in India are considered to be the safest.
How is the vote verification done?
According to the information, on receiving the application from the second and third place candidates, a team of engineers is sent by the manufacturers of the EVM machine. Which checks and verifies the vote results. During the vote verification, the candidate demanding the investigation along with the other candidates or their representatives are given the option to be present there, so that they consider this investigation fair. The cost of this investigation is borne by the candidate demanding the investigation. The cost incurred in this process is notified by the Election Commission. Which will be reimbursed by the candidate demanding the investigation. However, if any fault is found in the EVM, then all the money is returned to the candidate. In case of fault, the government bears all its expenses. But if the EVM report is found to be correct by the expert, then all the money of the candidate who demanded the investigation remains with the commission. According to the rules, no candidate is eligible to apply for getting the money back.
