Understanding an MP’s Salary

As per the Indian Constitution, members of both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha receive a basic salary of ₹1,00,000 under the Act of 1954. Moreover, they are entitled to a separate pension.

During the tenure of the Modi government, amendments in the Act of 1954 ensured an automatic increment in MPs’ salaries every five years. This automatically curtails their ability to propose any bill related to salary increments within the legislative assembly.

Facilities Granted to an MP

An MP enjoys various perks and facilities. These include medical allowances, travel expenses, telephone provisions, and separate grants for participating in the proceedings of the house.

For instance, they receive ₹50,000 for telephone expenses, ₹16 per kilometer for travel, ₹70,000 for their constituency, and an additional ₹60,000 for their participation in legislative activities.
